LAPEER — A Michigan State Police (MSP) Bomb Squad from Bridgeport was dispatched Sunday evening to a report of a suspected landmine discovered by two men who were magnet fishing in the Flint River at Rotary Park in Lapeer.
Magnet fishing hobbyists use rope and mega-strong magnets to pull trash, firearms, bicycles and even war artifacts from lakes, rivers and waterways.
The Lapeer Police Dept. received a call from Lapeer County Central Dispatch at 7:53 p.m. that two men — from Lapeer and Dryden — found what they believed to be a landmine in the river near the Oregon Street bridge. Lapeer officers responded to the scene, secured the area and evacuated the park.
Nearby residents on Lyle Street were asked to remain indoors during the incident response.
Det./Sgt. Craig Gormley of the Lapeer Police Dept. said the bomb squad determined there were no explosives contained inside the device which resembled an M15 landmine — a large circular U.S. anti-tank mine first deployed during the Korean War.
The device was collected and retained by the MSP Bomb Squad for further investigation.
The area was cleared and reopened at approximately 10:50 p.m.
